Hilda Prager (née Friedfeld; 1919–2009) and her husband, Max Prager (1918–2014), raised Dennis Prager in Brooklyn. [requires citation] Prager was raised in a Modern Orthodox Jewish home with his siblings. He was a student at the Yeshiva of Flatbush in Brooklyn, where he met Joseph Telushkin.

He majored in history at Brooklyn College and graduated with honours. He was invited by a Jewish group to travel to the Soviet Union in 1969, when he was studying in England, to interview Jews about their lives there. When he returned the following year, he was in high demand as a speaker on Soviet Jewish repression; he earned enough money from his talks to travel to almost sixty countries.

He became the national spokesman for the Soviet Jewry Student Struggle.

Prager’s career began at the same time as a growing trend among American Jews, who had previously been strongly liberal, to move toward the centre and, in some cases, to the right, fueled in part by the immigration of Jews from the Soviet Union. In 1975, Prager and Telushkin released The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism, a nonobservant Jewish introduction to Judaism that became a blockbuster.

In the 1976 US presidential election, Prager backed Jimmy Carter.  From 1976 to 1983, Prager was the director of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, where Telushkin worked. It was Prager’s first paid position. He quickly gained a reputation as a moral critic who targeted secularism and narcissism, both of which he claimed were harming society; others compared him to a Jewish Billy Graham.

In 1982, Prager was hired by KABC (AM) in Los Angeles to anchor Religion on the Line, a Sunday night religious talk show that received high ratings and eventually led to a weekday talk show.  Why the Jews?, a book he co-authored with Telushkin, was published in 1983. Antisemitism’s Root Cause.

According to a review in Commentary, the book portrays anti-Semitism as a “sinister form of flattery,” with the writers claiming that anti-Semitism stems from anger of Jews’ embrace of the idea that they are God’s chosen people, tasked with imparting a moral message to the world.  The book portrays Jews as both a people and a nation.

He also had a syndicated column that appeared in newspapers all throughout the country. Ultimate Issues, Prager’s own quarterly publication, was founded in 1985 and renamed The Prager Perspective in 1996. He divorced in 1986 and went to treatment for a year, according to the Encyclopedia of Judaism, which helped him write Happiness Is a Serious Problem in 1999.  He wrote an article titled “Judai” in 1990.
