He went to Shippensburg State College and received his bachelor’s degree from there. The following year, he began working as a teacher for an anti-poverty campaign in the 1960s. He used to write in his spare time, but he hasn’t gotten serious about it yet.

He previously worked as a high school English teacher outside of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In the 1970s, with the encouragement and support of his wife, Gerda, he began a full-time writing career. Seth’s early work consisted of novels in a variety of genres, including romance and thriller, that were published under a large number of pseudonyms.

When Koontz was a senior in college, he was the winner of the Atlantic Monthly Fiction Competition. Over 400 million copies of his books have been sold worldwide, and his work has been published in more than 38 languages all over the world, according to estimates. His books have reached the top of the New York Times bestsellers list thirteen times, and he has also achieved success as a best-selling author in countries as disparate as Sweden and Japan, among others.

It was in 1973 that his novel Demon Seed was sold to the studio MGM. The film did a moderate amount of business and managed to make it onto prime time television, despite the unpleasant concept of an artificial intelligence wanting to reproduce offspring.
