David Banner Biography

As the eldest son of Zeno Crump Jr., Jackson’s district fire chief, and Carolyn Crump, Lavell William was born in Brookhaven and raised in Jackson. He attended his mother’s alma school, Southern University, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after graduating from Jackson’s Provine High School in 1992.

President of the Student Government Association at Southern University, Crump earned a bachelor’s degree in business.

He went on to earn a master’s degree in education from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, but dropped out to focus on his music career full-time.

The Incredible Hulk’s protagonist, David Banner, inspired Crump to use the name “David Banner” as his stage name. Banner sent some demo cassettes to WJMI in Jackson, Mississippi, with the help of a few of his pals. The album Grey Skies, by Crooked Lettaz, was published in 1999 through Banner and Kamikaze (Penalty Recordings).




Them Firewater Boyz, Vol. 1 was Banner’s first solo album released in 2000. Around 7,000 copies of the album were distributed by Big Face Records, an independent record company.

Scott Johnson and Banner chose to join with SRC Records, which was created by Steve Rifkind, a former CEO of the heavyweight hip-hop company, Loud Records, after evaluating numerous offers. ‘Touching’, a collaboration with Jazze Pha, peaked at No. 54 on the R&B charts. When Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, DJ Shadow released “The Outsider,” which includes “Seein’ Thangs,” a song about the disaster.

Nump and Gold, two Bay Area hip-hop artists, contributed to the remix. On the side of his work as an artist, Banner has contributed to the soundtrack for a video game ad as well as composed the theme song for Saint’s Row, an action video game for the PlayStation 3. In Black Snake Moan, Banner performed the role of Tehronne (2006).

In 2008, gospel R&B duet Mary Mary used Banner on their tune “Superfriend” from their album “The Sound.”

His roles as Bosch in The Experiment and Jay, a gang leader from the ghetto in Stomp the Yard: Homecoming were both filmed in 2010. Seeda, a Japanese rapper, was one of the musicians he collaborated with on his Breathe album, where he was included in the song, Life Song.

Free downloads of Banner’s debut mixtape, Sex, Drugs, and Video Games were made available on May 22, 2012.
