Lord Richard Attenborough’s younger child, born on May 8, 1926. He never showed an interest in acting and instead went to Cambridge University to study Natural Sciences, graduating in 1947, the same year he began his two-year National Service in the Royal Navy. He started his popular “Zoo Quest” series in 1954, after joining BBC Television at Alexandra Palace in 1952. He delivered political broadcasts, archaeological quizzes, short stories, cooking, and religious programmes when he wasn’t “Zoo Questing.”
In 1964, Michael Peacock became the Controller of BBC2, Britain’s third television station. Peacock was promoted to BBC1 a year later, and Attenborough was promoted to BBC2 Controller. As a result, he was responsible for the introduction of colour television to the United Kingdom, as well as the global release of Monty Python’s Flying Circus (1969).
He was appointed Director of Programmes in 1969, with editorial responsibility for both BBC television networks. Eight years at a desk had become too much for him, and he resigned in 1973 to pursue a career as a programmer. “Eastwards with Attenborough,” a natural history series set in Southeast Asia, was followed by The Tribal Eye (1975), a documentary about tribal art.
