On May 27, 2014, Patrick defeated three-term incumbent David Dewhurst in a primary runoff for lieutenant governor.  After that, he won the general election in the fall. In 2018, he was re-elected, defeating Democratic candidate Mike Collier. Patrick was born Dannie Scott Goeb on April 4, 1950, in Baltimore, Maryland.  He grew up in an East Baltimore blue-collar neighbourhood.  He is the only child of Vilma Jean Marshall (1926–2016) and Charles Anthony Goeb (1926–2002), who worked as a newspaper vendor for The Baltimore Sun for thirty-one years before retiring in 1984.

Patrick holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.  He is the first in his family to earn a college diploma.  He changed his name from “Dannie Scott Goeb” to “Dan Goeb Patrick” after graduating and starting a broadcasting career — informally in 1977 and legally in 2004 – to honour his wife’s family and brother-in-law.

Patrick began his first radio career when he was 18 years old, in 1968. [4] After college, he worked for WNEP-TV in Scranton, Pennsylvania, as a television announcer. Patrick later held a similar role at WTTG in Washington, D.C., before joining KHOU-TV in Houston as the primary sportscaster.

Patrick gained notice as a broadcaster by doing things like painting himself blue in favour of the Houston Oilers and wearing a huge cowboy hat.  By 1983, he was the second most popular TV personality in Houston,, as well as one of the most well-known,, yet he was also one of the most loathed, according to surveys. Patrick and several investors founded Dan and Nick’s Sports market, one of the earliest sports bars in the United States, in November 1983. Due to “the strength of Patrick’s personality” and an oil boom in Houston at the time, the bar did well for a while, and they eventually bought five sports pubs in the city. Patrick’s mother worked as a bookkeeper for the company.

When the oil boom of the mid-80s ended, Houston’s economy tanked, putting Patrick’s sports bar franchise in jeopardy.  After the sports bars collapsed in 1986, Patrick filed for personal bankruptcy and was freed of several hundred thousand dollars in debt in October 1992.  Patrick has publicly remarked that it took him and his family ten years to “regain financial equilibrium.”

Patrick rebuilt himself as a conservative talk radio personality in the 1990s after filing for bankruptcy.  In the summer of 1987, he purchased a four-hour timeslot at AM 700 KSEV (then known as KTBT).  He used to be a sports radio broadcaster, broadcasting from his last sports bar.   In 1988, he was able to take over the radio station, and shortly after that, he entered politics.
