Daddy Yankee was born Ramón Luis Ayala Rodrguez in Ro Piedras, Puerto Rico’s largest district, on February 3, 1977. His father was a salsa percussionist known as a bongosero, and his mother, while a manicurist, came from a musical family. Daddy Yankee and his brother, Nomar, had grown up around music since their father frequently performed in front of them.

At the age of 13, Daddy Yankee began singing and rapping, with an emphasis on lyrical improvisation. He then developed an interest in reggaetón, Spanish-language dancehall reggae, and was heavily influenced by Vico C’s approach, frequently imitating DJ Playero, DJ Nelson, and DJ Draco.
