Cynthia Lummis is an American lawyer and politician who currently serves as the junior United States Senator from Wyoming. She is the first woman elected to the Senate from Wyoming. She was a Republican who served in the United States Congress from 2009 to 2017 as the Representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district.

Cynthia Lummis was born in the United States on September 10, 1954, in Cheyenne. Doran Lummis and the former Enid Bennett are her parents’ names. She attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie after high school and earned two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in animal science in 1976 and the other in biology in 1978. She graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Juris Doctorate in 1985 and clerked for the Wyoming Supreme Court.

Lummis’ fortune is mostly derived from her family’s businesses, which include the Arp and Hammond Company, Lummis Livestock Company, and Old Horse Pasture, Inc. The Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame inducted her in 2016. She will be the first senator to hold cryptocurrencies when she takes office in the Senate in 2021; she purchased Bitcoin in 2013 after her son-in-law persuaded her to do so.

Cynthia Lummis got her start in politics as the interim head of Wyoming’s Office of State Lands and Investments. From 1979 to 1983, and again from 1985 to 1993, Lummis served in the Wyoming House of Representatives. From 1993 to 1995, she served in the Wyoming Senate.

Cynthia Lummis was Wyoming Governor Jim Geringer’s chief counsel from 1995 to 1997. She defeated businessman and rancher Mark Gordon in the August primary election.

Lummis fought against Democratic contender Gary Trauner, a Teton County School Board Trustee who competed against Cubin in 2006 and came close to winning. Lummis was chastised by Trauner for favouring privatisation of Social Security and advocating that the retirement age for receiving benefits be raised; instead, he suggested that the FICA tax be imposed on income exceeding $100,000, which is now exempt.

Lummis was said to be exploring a bid for governor of Wyoming in 2018 after retiring from Congress in 2016. She ruled it out in late 2017, saying she was enjoying her time away from politics but will likely run for office again later. After Ryan Zinke resigned, the Trump administration considered her for Secretary of the Interior, but David Bernhardt was subsequently selected. Senator Mike Enzi of Wyoming announced his retirement on May 4, 2019, sparking rumours that Lummis would seek for his seat in the 2020 election. She declared her candidacy on July 11, 2019. She came out on top in the election.

On January 3, 2021, Lummis was sworn in as a senator. Lummis supported a group of Republican senators led by Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz in a failed attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in January 2021. She supported the challenge to Pennsylvania’s electoral votes but opposed the challenge to Arizona’s. The Senate dismissed both objections, 92–7 and 93–6, respectively. Lummis voted in favour of Avril Haines, Lloyd Austin, Janet Yellen, Pete Buttigieg, Denis McDonough, Tom Vilsack, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Cecilia Rouse, Katherine Tai, and against the remainder of President Joe Biden’s Cabinet selections.

Due to a blizzard in Wyoming, she did not vote for Deb Haaland’s nominee for Secretary of the Interior and Isabel Guzman’s nomination for Administrator of the Small Business Administration. Lummis voted against forming an independent committee to examine the January 6 insurgency on May 28, 2021.
