Cory Booker (Politician) Biography
Cory Booker was born on April 27, 1969, in Washington, D.C. He was born to Carolyn Rose and Cary Alfred Booker. His parents were among IBM’s first black executives. Booker learned about his Sierra Leonean ancestors while appearing on the PBS television program Finding Your Roots.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in sociology from Stanford University in 1991 and 1992, respectively. He was a tight end for Stanford and was teammates with Brad Muster and Ed McCaffrey. He was named to the All–Pacific-10 Academic team. He was chosen president of the senior class. Booker also arranged aid from Stanford students for kids in East Palo Alto, California, through The Bridge Peer Counseling Center, a student-run crisis hotline.
Booker received a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University and graduated from The Queen’s College with a degree in American history in 1994. Booker was the president of the Oxford University L’Chaim Society while at Oxford. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1997 with a Juris Doctorate and went on to run free legal clinics for low-income New Haven residents. Booker was a founder member of the Chai Society at Yale (now Shabtai). He was also an active member of the National Black Law Students Association and a Big Brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

Cory Booker Career
During his final year at Yale, Booker resided in the city. He worked as a staff attorney for the Urban Justice Center in New York and as the programme supervisor for the Newark Youth Project after graduation. Booker defeated four-term incumbent George Branch in an unexpected victory for a seat on the Newark Municipal Council in 1998.
He embarked on a 10-day hunger strike, living in a tent and then in a motor home in drug-dealing areas of the city, to raise attention to the problems of open-air drug dealing and attendant violence. Booker also suggested council measures affecting housing, young people, law and order, and City Hall’s efficiency and openness, but he was consistently defeated.
Instead of standing for reelection as a councilman, Booker declared his campaign for mayor of Newark on January 9, 2002. James, who had won four elections in a row with ease, viewed Booker as a serious danger and retaliated with mudslinging.
On July 1, 2006, Booker was elected mayor of Newark. He launched a 100-day plan to enact reforms after his first week in office. Increased police forces, the elimination of background checks for many public positions to assist former offenders in finding work in the city, the refurbishment of police stations, the improvement of city services, and the expansion of summer youth activities were among the suggested improvements.
He received the Sarah Brady Visionary Award from the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence in October 2009 for his efforts to reduce gun violence. Newark, which led the country in violent crime reduction from 2006 to 2008, had a substantial decline in crime under his mayoralty. Newark had its first month without a homicide in over 44 years in March 2010, however murder and general crime rates began to climb again following 2008.
On December 20, 2012, Booker said that he will consider competing for the U.S. Senate seat held by Frank Lautenberg at the time in the 2014 election, putting an end to speculation that he might run against Governor Chris Christie in the 2013 gubernatorial race. Booker submitted papers to create a campaign committee on January 11, 2013, without saying if he will run. Lautenberg, who was then 89 years old, declared a month later that he would not seek reelection in 2014.
Lautenberg died of viral pneumonia on June 3, and Booker declared five days later that he would compete for Lautenberg’s seat in a 2013 special election. At two rallies, one in Newark and the other in Willingboro, Booker declared his candidacy.
Booker faced Republican nominee Rik Mehta, a pharmaceutical businessman and attorney, in his reelection campaign. As a result of Governor Phil Murphy’s decree in reaction to the COVID-19 epidemic, the election was mostly conducted via mail-in votes. Booker and Mehta engaged in a virtual discussion hosted by the New Jersey Globe, in which they debated topics such as Trump’s administration, COVID-19 lockdowns, Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court nominee, and systematic racism.
