Grassley lectured at Charles City College from 1967 to 1968.

Chuck Grassley Career
Grassley was one of 32 senators who signed a letter endorsing Director of the Office of Management and Budget David Stockman to President Ronald Reagan in November 1981. While the Reagan administration was attempting to persuade senators to approve legislation authorising the creation of a radio station to broadcast to Cuba, Grassley joined fellow Iowa senators Roger Jepsen and Edward Zorinsky in requesting an amendment to the bill prohibiting the Reagan administration from operating Radio Marti on that frequency or other commercial AM frequencies.
Grassley voted against making Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday an official holiday in October 1983. Grassley co-sponsored legislation honouring King posthumously in 2004, which was signed into law on October 25 of that year.
Only two Republican senators, Grassley and Mark Hatfield of Oregon, voted against joining the international coalition to drive Iraq out of Kuwait in January 1991. In August 1991, he was appointed as one of six Republicans to the Select Senate Committee on POW-MIA Affairs, which was formed in response to increasing interest in the number of Americans remaining missing after the Vietnam War. Grassley was one of 50 senators who voted to convict and impeach President Bill Clinton on February 12, 1999.
In May 2001, Grassley met with Democratic senator Max Baucus to discuss the allocation of funds in tax cuts, and both stated that they were making progress toward a bipartisan agreement, with Grassley adding that the bill would include all four of the main elements proposed by the Bush administration, with the Senate Finance Committee modifying the Bush proposal’s components.
Grassley said in March 2009, during a scandal involving AIG executives obtaining high salary bonuses from the taxpayer-funded bailout of AIG, that those AIG employees receiving large bonuses should follow the so-called “Japanese model” and resign immediately or commit suicide. He rejected the remarks as hyperbole after some backlash.
Grassley cosponsored a proposal in May 2009 to alter the US Constitution to make flag burning illegal. In January 2010, Grassley was one of seven Senate Republicans who signed a letter to the White House expressing serious reservations about TSA nominee Erroll Southers’ previous tapping of databases for information about his ex-boyfriend wife’s in the late 1980s, citing conflicting accounts Southers gave the Senate.
In December 2010, Grassley was one of 26 senators who voted against ratifying New START, a nuclear arms reduction treaty between the United States and the Russian Federation that requires both countries to deploy no more than 1,550 strategic warheads and 700 launchers over the next seven years, as well as continuing on-site inspections that ceased when START I expired. It was the first time Russia has signed a weapons pact in eight years.
Senators Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey offered a gun control amendment in April 2013, but Grassley opposed it, instead proposing alternative measures to boost gun violence prosecutions and expand mental health data reporting in background checks.
Grassley is one of just two senators who served under Jimmy Carter’s presidency, the other being Vermont’s Patrick Leahy. Grassley has served on the Senate Finance Committee, Senate Narcotics Committee, Senate Judiciary Committee, and Senate Aging Committee throughout his four decades in the Senate.
