Black Thought Biography

Black Thought was born Tarik Luqmaan Trotter to Nation of Islam members Thomas and Cassandra Trotter. Trotter’s father was assassinated when he was a year old, and his mother was assassinated when he was in high school.

He spent time graffiti-tagging “DT” or “Double T” throughout Philadelphia. He briefly peddled crack cocaine and was moved to live with family in Detroit during his senior year of high school.

Trotter studied journalism at Millersville University and the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts.

He met drummer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson in 1987 and the two established a drummer/MC team that performed on the streets of Philadelphia and at talent shows.

Trotter later joined the Square Roots as one of two MCs; the other was Malik B., whom Tariq met in college. In high school, Black Thought developed an interest in the Nation of Gods and Earths’ lessons.

In 2010, Black Thought married Michelle. He is the father of four sons and a daughter.

Black Thought Career

Trotter and Thompson’s 1987 collaboration grew into a rap group that went through multiple lineup changes and moniker changes before settling on the Roots.

Organix (1993) marked the band’s independent recording debut; shortly thereafter, they signed with major label DGC, releasing the RIAA gold-certified Do You Want More?!!!??! Illadelph Halflife (1995), his second straight Billboard Top Ten R&B/hip-hop album (1996).

The latter included the Top 40 hit “What They Do,” establishing Trotter – then known as Black Thought – as one of the less materialistic crossover rappers.

Thought gained significant hip-hop credibility in the process, as evidenced not only by his appearance on the cover of XXL magazine’s “Greatest Day in Hip-Hop History” issue (October 1998) but also by the attention he received during the shoot from Rakim, one of his biggest influences.

The Roots’ greatest success came with Things Fall Apart (1999), which debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200, eventually went platinum, and was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Rap Album.

Its most successful track, “You Got Me,” featuring Erykah Badu, received the award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Phrenology (2002) and The Tipping Point (2004) followed on MCA and Geffen, with the former becoming another gold seller and earning a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album.

The Roots then signed their longest-running label deal with Def Jam, a phase that has resulted in artistically uncompromising and Grammy-nominated works such as Game Theory (2006), How I Got Over (2011), and Undun (2012).

Meanwhile, the Roots became the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and collaborated on albums with John Legend, Betty Wright, and Elvis Costello, but Thought was only involved with the series’s first installment, Wake Up! (2010), which earned a Grammy for Best R&B Album.

Since the Roots’ ascension began, Black Thought has appeared on hundreds of tracks, including those by contemporaries Common, Pharoahe Monch, Ghostface Killah, Talib Kweli, and J Dilla. His output as a headliner has been negligible.

In 1998, he collaborated with producer J. Tacuma, better known as jazz bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, on a pair of 12-inch singles “releases on the P-Vine label in Japan.

A few years later, MCA released “Hardware,” a 12″ billed as “the first single from Masterpiece Theater’s debut solo album.” That endeavor was abandoned, albeit some of its materials were incorporated into the Roots’ Phrenology. Thought’s next solo release came in 2018, following a mind-boggling ten-minute freestyle for Funkmaster Flex’s Hot 97 radio show.

The following June, Streams of Thought, Vol. 1, a five-track digital EP produced by 9th Wonder (four tracks) and Khrysis (one track), was released. By that time, Thought had established himself as an actor and added a recurring role in the dramatic television series The Deuce to his resume.

That November, Thought released Streams of Thought, Vol. 2, which Salaam Remi produced entirely. He then collaborated with Sean C on Streams of Thought, Vol. 3: Cane & Able, which is scheduled to be released in October 2020. The concert included “Good Morning,” which included guest MCs Pusha T and Killer Mike and was hyped by Swizz Beatz.
