Hagerty was born in the United States on August 14, 1959, in Sumner County, Tennessee. In 2017, he earned the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award after becoming an Eagle Scout. He attended Madisonville North Hopkins High School in Kentucky and graduated in 1977. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1981 and a Juris Doctorate in 1984.

Bill Hagerty Career
Hagerty started his career with Boston Consulting Group, where he spent three years in Tokyo. He worked as an economic counsellor and White House Fellow in President George H. W. Bush’s administration before moving into private equity, first with Trident Capital in Silicon Valley. Hagerty is a co-founder and former managing director of Hagerty Peterson & Company, a private equity investment business. He was Mitt Romney’s national finance chair during the 2008 presidential campaign.
From 2011 to 2014, Hagerty served in Governor Bill Haslam’s cabinet as commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, where he was involved with Bridgestone, Calsonic Kansei, and Nissan investments in Tennessee. CyMed, NEW Customer Services, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Ryman Hospitality, Pinnacle Financial Partners, and R.J. O’Brien are among the companies Hagerty has been on the board of.
Hagerty created and managed the Nashville MLS Steering Committee, a group aiming to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to Nashville, Tennessee, before being confirmed as the United States Ambassador to Japan. The work paid off, with Nashville being named the first of two new Major League Soccer expansion cities on December 20, 2017. Nashville SC will make their MLS debut in the 2020 season.
Hagerty was selected to serve as a delegate for Jeb Bush during the early phases of the 2016 presidential election. Bush withdrew out of the campaign before the March 1, 2016 Tennessee primary. After the Tennessee primary, Hagerty served as Tennessee’s Trump Victory Chair. In August of 2016, when Trump became the Republican candidate, he was named director of appointments for Trump’s presidential transition team.
On March 27, 2017, Trump nominated Hagerty to be the US Ambassador to Japan. On July 13, 2017, he was confirmed by the United States Senate by an 86–12 majority. On July 27, 2017, he was sworn in as the United States’ 30th Ambassador.
Hagerty was apparently under consideration for the position of United States Trade Representative prior to his confirmation, based on his past international trade and U.S. foreign investment expertise. Robert Lighthizer, an attorney and former Reagan Administration official, was finally appointed to the position.
On July 16, 2019, Hagerty declared his intention to run for Senate and retire as Ambassador to Japan. On July 12, 2019, Trump announced that Hagerty will retire as Ambassador to Japan in order to compete for the United States Senate seat in Tennessee in 2020. Trump backed Hagerty for Senate in the same tweet. During the same time period, Hagerty was touted as a possible US Secretary of State.
On September 9, 2019, Hagerty formally announced his Senate candidacy. He had raised $1.9 million for his campaign by September 30. Hagerty has raised more than $7 million by April 6, including $1.2 million in the first quarter of 2020. Donald Trump Jr., Kimberly Guilfoyle, and Nikki Haley were among the speakers at Hagerty’s campaign fundraisers.
Beginning in late May of 2020, news sites began disseminating an article written by Roger Sollenberger for Salon, which discussed charges of Hagerty’s campaign finance fraud. The report focused mostly on a loan provided by Pinnacle Financial Partners to the Hagerty Campaign shortly after the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act was passed.
Hagerty won the Republican primary on August 6, 2020. In the November general election, he beat Democratic nominee Marquita Bradshaw by 1,840,926 votes to 1,040,691. On January 3, 2021, Hagerty entered office.
