Ben Sasse (Politician) Biography

Ben Sasse was born in Plainview, Nebraska, on February 22, 1972, to Gary Lynn and Linda Sasse, a high school teacher and football coach. He was the valedictorian of his class at Fremont Senior High School in 1990.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in government from Harvard University in 1994. He also spent the autumn of 1992 on a junior year abroad programme at the University of Oxford. Sasse obtained a Master of Arts in liberal studies from St. John’s College’s Graduate Institute in 1998. Yale University awarded him a Master of Arts, Master of Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy in history. Sasse was named a Harvey Fellow by the Mustard Seed Foundation in 2000.

Sasse and his wife, Melissa, have three children and live in Fremont, Nebraska. Their children are educated at home.

Sasse worked as an associate consultant at the management consulting company Boston Consulting Group from September 1994 until November 1995. He worked as a consultant/executive director for Christians United For Reformation for the following year (CURE). CURE amalgamated with the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals (ACE) during Sasse’s term, and he became the executive director of ACE in Anaheim, California.

Ben Sasse worked as the head of staff for the US Department of Justice Office of Legal Policy in Washington, D.C. from January 2004 to January 2005, as well as a part-time assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin, travelling to Austin to lecture. From January through July 2005, Sasse left the Department of Justice to work as the head of staff for Representative Jeff Fortenberry.

From July to September 2005, Sasse worked as a consultant for the United States Department of Homeland Security in Washington, D.C., on national security problems. From September 2005 until December 2006, he relocated to Austin, Texas, to continue his full-time professorship.

Sasse worked as a counsellor to the secretary at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in Washington, D.C. from December 2006 to December 2007, advising the secretary on a wide range of health policy problems, from healthcare access to food safety and security.

Sasse was appointed assistant secretary for planning and evaluation in the US Department of Health and Human Services by President George W. Bush in July 2007. In December 2007, the Senate approved him, and he served until the conclusion of the Bush administration in January 2009. Sasse took an unpaid leave from the University of Texas while at HHS.

Sasse represented private equity clients and health-care investors in 2009, as well as teaching at the University of Texas. Before being named president of Midland University, he became a fellow at the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs’ Center for Politics and Governance in October 2009.

Sasse declared his campaign for the Senate seat held by Republican Mike Johanns, who did not seek reelection, in October 2013. His first quarter fundraising total of over $815,000 from individual contributors surpassed Johanns’ previous record of $526,000 from individual donors established in 2007 while he was the United States Secretary of Agriculture.

When Donald Trump supporters stormed the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, Sasse was participating in the certification of the 2021 United States Electoral College vote tally. As a result, he blamed Trump. On February 13, 2021, Sasse joined six other Republican Senators in voting to convict Trump.
