Ben Luján is an American politician who has served in the United States Senate as a junior senator from New Mexico since 2021. From 2009 to 2021, he was the United States Representative representing New Mexico’s 3rd congressional district, and from 2019 to 2021, he was the assistant House Democratic leader. From 2005 to 2008, he was a member of the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission, where he also served as chairman.

Ben Luján (Politician) Biography

Ben Luján was born in the United States, in Nambé Pueblo, New Mexico. He has two elder sisters and an older brother, and is the son of Carmen and Ben Luján. When his father, Ben Luján, was elected to the County Commission in 1970, he entered politics. He has been a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives since 1975, where he served as Majority Whip and Speaker of the House.

He worked as a blackjack dealer in a Lake Tahoe casino and a Northern New Mexico tribal casino after graduating from Pojoaque Valley High School. He went to the University of New Mexico after his period as a dealer and eventually earned a BBA from New Mexico Highlands University.

Luján has worked for the government in a variety of capacities. Prior to his election to the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission, he worked for the New Mexico Cultural Affairs Department as the Deputy State Treasurer, Director of Administrative Services, and Chief Financial Officer.

In November 2004, Luján was elected to the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission. He represented PRC district 3 in New Mexico, which includes northeastern, north central, and central regions. In 2005, 2006, and 2007, he was Chairman of the PRC. In New Mexico, he worked to boost the Renewable Portfolio Standard, which mandates utilities to utilise 20 percent renewable energy by 2020. Luján also mandated that utilities diversify their renewable energy sources by including solar, wind, and biomass.

Luján signed the Joint Action Framework on Climate Change with regulators from California, Oregon, and Washington in order to develop regional solutions to global warming. Luján declared his candidacy to succeed retiring Senator Tom Udall in the 2020 election on April 1, 2019. Luján won the Democratic primary unopposed on June 2, 2020.

On January 3, 2021, Luján was sworn into the Senate. Senator Tom Udall, the departing Senator, accompanied him. When Trump supporters stormed the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, he was participating in the certification of the 2021 United States Electoral College vote tally. He described the assault as a “siege” and a “direct attack on our democracy.” Luján claimed after the incident that he would vote to impeach Trump for “inciting an insurgency.”

Luján was one of seven Democratic senators who joined Republicans in opposing a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing, often known as fracking, in February 2021.
