Awkwafina Biography

Lum was born in Stony Brook, Long Island, New York, to a Chinese American father, Wally, and a Korean mother, Tia, who came to the United States from South Korea in 1972. Lum was born and raised in Forest Hills, Queens.

Lum was four years old when her mother died of pulmonary hypertension, and she was reared by her father and paternal grandparents, developing a strong bond with her paternal grandmother.

Her paternal great-grandfather was a Chinese immigrant who established the Cantonese restaurant Lum’s in Flushing, Queens, in the 1940s, one of the neighborhood’s first Chinese establishments.

Lum attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, where she studied trumpet and received classical and jazz music training. At the age of 15, she began performing under the stage name Awkwafina, which she describes as an opposite ego to her “quiet and more docile” demeanor during her undergraduate years.

She studied Mandarin at the Beijing Language and Culture University from 2006 to 2008 in order to interact freely with her paternal grandma. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in women’s studies from the University at Albany, State University of New York, in 2011.

She has stated that early influences included Charles Bukowski, Anas Nin, Joan Didion, Tom Waits, and Chet Baker. Prior to entering the entertainment industry, she interned at Gotham Gazette and the Times Union newspaper in Albany, New York, and worked as a PR assistant for the publishing firm Rodale Books.

She eventually worked at a vegan bodega after being fired from the publishing business after her music videos were found.

At the age of 13, Awkwafina began rapping. She began making music using GarageBand but quickly progressed to Logic Pro and Ableton. In 2012, her song “My Vag” became a YouTube sensation.

She penned the song in response to Mickey Avalon’s “My Dick (Tribute to Nate)” in college. When her boss identified her in the video, she was sacked from her position at a publishing business. Awkwafina appears in six episodes of Girl Code’s third and fourth seasons in 2014. She co-hosted the show’s spin-off, Girl Code Live, on MTV in 2015.

From 2015 to 2017, she hosted the web series Tawk, a short-form chat show, for the digital production company Astronauts Wanted.

The first season premiered on YouTube and was picked up by Verizon’s Go90 platform for exclusive streaming. It was a 2016 Webby Award Official Honoree and was nominated for a 2016 Streamy Award in the area of News and Culture.

In 2016, she appeared in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising as Christine, a Kappa Nu member, and voiced Quail in the animated comedy picture Storks.

In 2018, she played Rebecca, one of four closest friends, in the independent comedy Dude. She was a member of the main cast of Ocean’s 8, an all-female prequel to the Ocean’s Trilogy.

She later co-starred in Jon M. Chu’s Crazy Rich Asians as Goh Peik Lin, a Singaporean college buddy of the primary character Rachel Chu (Constance Wu). She is also a writer and executive producer of the comedy series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.

She made new announcements for the 7 train of the New York City Subway as part of the promotional effort, making quips such as “This is Hunters Point Avenue, a gentle reminder that seats are for people, not your luggage,” and “This is 46th Street, which I recently discovered is a fortunate number.

Additionally, I discovered that pigeons and doves are synonymous with, WHAT?! “, at each and every stop. These recordings were used until the series’s January 22 launch.
