Ashanti was born at Glen Cove, Nassau County, New York, in Long Island, on October 13, 1980. Tina Douglas, her mother, was a former dance teacher, and Ken-Kaye Thomas Douglas, her father, was a former vocalist. She was called after Ghana’s Ashanti Empire, where women enjoyed equal rights, and her mother desired that Ashanti follow the same virtue and attain authority.

Her mother put her in a dance class, where she mastered jazz and ballet. Her vocal abilities became apparent much later in life. The singer’s first appearance was in a church choir when she was barely three years old. Her mother first spotted her singing ability when she was twelve years old and performing Mary J Blige’s ‘Reminiscence.’
