Huston was born in the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles at 6:29 p.m. on July 8, 1951, to director and actor John Huston and prima ballerina and model Enrica Soma.

According to Huston, “knowledge of my arrival was immediately cabled to the post office in Butiaba, Western Uganda, and two days later, a barefoot runner with a telegram arrived at Murchison Falls, where her father was filming The African Queen” (1951). Huston’s paternal grandfather was actor Walter Huston, who was born in Canada.

Huston’s father is of Scottish, Scotch-Irish, English, and Welsh descent, while her mother is of Italian ancestry. Her family went to Ireland when she was two years old, where she spent most of her childhood and still considers home.

Her parents rented what Huston referred to as the “Courtown House” in County Kildare for three years before John Huston purchased St. Clerans, a 110-acre estate in County Galway, in 1954. She was educated at Kylemore Abbey and later at Holland Park School in England after transferring to the country.

Huston was a personal friend of Gregory Peck, the actor who was directed by her father in Moby Dick (1956). They met on the location of the film when she was four years old and Peck was dressed as Captain Ahab. Huston reconnected with Peck decades later, following her father’s death, and maintained a friendship with him until his death.

In March 1977, Huston became an unintentional witness in the Roman Polanski sexual assault case when she met Polanski and his 13-year-old victim by happenstance at the house of her lover Jack Nicholson.




Huston was detained for cocaine possession during a search of her home in connection with the allegations against Polanski, but she was never charged since the search and seizure of her handbag were illegal. Despite the fact that she had witnessed no abuse, Huston became enmeshed in the headlines surrounding Polanski’s trial as a rumored prosecution witness, but she was never summoned.
