Angela Evelyn Bassett was born in New York City, New York, USA, on August 16, 1958, to Betty Jane and Daniel Benjamin Bassett. Her father worked as an electrician, and her mother as a nurse’s assistant. When she was just ten months old, her parents sent her to live with her father’s sister, Aunt Golden, in Winston-Salem.

Soon after, her parents divorced, and her mother brought her and her younger sister D’nette to live with her grandparents in St. Petersburg, Florida. Angela attended church on Sundays and was a member of the youth choir.

She adored listening to ‘Motown’ tunes on the radio, and her mother frequently forced her and her sister to dance to the songs. Later, a neighboring lady assisted them in organizing a dancing group.

Her mother, who had slacked off in high school, was determined that her children would not face the same fate and was especially vigilant about their academic performance. Angela attended ‘Boca Ciega High School,’ where she was an ‘Upward Bound’ participant. Additionally, she joined the debate team, the student council, the drama club, and the chorus.

In 1980, she graduated from ‘Yale University with a bachelor’s degree in African-American studies. She got a Master of Fine Arts degree from the ‘Yale School of Drama’ three years later. Angela Bassett married actor Courtney B. Vance in 1997, after meeting him while attending ‘Yale University.’
