Alicia Keys was born Alicia Augello Cook in New York City, New York, parents Teresa and Craig Cook on January 25, 1981. Her mother worked as a flight attendant and her father as a part-time actress. She is multiracial.

Her parents divorced when she was a child, and she was reared mostly by her mother. Alicia’s mother ensured that she had dancing and piano instruction as a child. Seven years old, she began learning classical piano.

At the age of 12, she enrolled in the ‘Professional Performing Arts School.’  Following graduation, she took her musical career seriously and secured a recording contract with ‘Columbia Records.’
