Alice Walker Biography

Alice Malsenior Walker was born to Willie Lee and Minnie Tallulah (Grant) Walker on February 9, 1944, in Eatonton, Georgia. She was, like many of Walker’s fictional features, the daughter of a sharecropper and the youngest of eight children, a farmer renting his land. Walker had accidentally been wounded at the age of 8 by a BB pistol shot at her brother’s eye.

Her partial eyesight prompted her to abandon regular childhood activities and to start composing poems to alleviate her loneliness. She realized that writing required peace and calm, but it was hard when 10 people were living in four rooms. She spent a lot of time working outdoors beneath a tree.

Walker attended separate schools which, according to existing standards, would be described as inferior, but she recalled that she had excellent teachers who encouraged her to think of the world she is trying to achieve. While Walker grew up in an impoverished household, her community supported her and her awareness that she could select her own identity. Walker stressed that her mother provided her “authorization” to be a writer and gave her the social, moral, and spiritual content for her works.

After graduating from high school Walker was awarded a Spelman College grant in Atlanta, Georgia, where she participated in a burgeoning civil rights movement that campaigned for equal rights amongst all races. In 1963, Walker was given a second bachelor’s degree and went to Sarah Lawrence College in New York where she graduated in 1965.

She spent her junior year as an exchange student at Sarah Lawrence in Africa. After her graduation, she worked in Georgia with the voter’s registration campaign and in Jackson, Mississippi with the Head Start Programme. There she met and in 1967 she married a civil rights lawyer, Melvyn Leventhal. Their marriage brought forth one child, Rebecca, before the divorce ended in 1976.

Walker met Jewish lawyer Melvyn Leventhal, they became the first legally married interracial couple to live in Mississippi after their marriage. Before they divorced in 1976, each had one daughter, Rebecca.

Walker dated men and women afterward, including singer Tracy Chapman. She was also openly battling with her daughter who detailed how her writer mom ignored her in her novel Black, White and Jewish: A Shifting Self autobiography (2000).

Alice Walker Career

Later Walker went to California to write her most popular novel, The Color Purple (1982). An epistolary newspaper portrays the development and self-realization of an African American lady in a village in Georgia between 1909 and 1947. The book was awarded a Pulitzer Prize and adapted to a Steven Spielberg movie in 1985. A musical rendition of Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones was first performed in 2004.

The first novel of Walker, Grange Copeland’s The Third Lives, focuses on the life of Ruth Copeland, a young African American, as well as her grandpa, Grange. Grange, like an old man, learns that he may love freely, but love does not come without severe responsibility. At the peak of this story, Grange summons his newly established wisdom to save Ruth from Brownfield, his violent son. The rescue requires Grange to murder his son to halt the cycle of cruelty.

The Color Purple is Walker’s third and most renowned work about Celie, a lady that can only communicate with God her difficulties in a letter. Poor, black, female, alone and illiterate, clerical and sexual, Celie, by the love of another woman, Shug Avery, learns to raise herself from sexual exploitation and violence.

When Walker’s debut novel (in 1970) was published, she remarked in an interview with Library Journal that, for her, “family connections are sacrosanct.” A lot of Walker’s work portrays the emotional, spiritual, and bodily destruction that happens when families trust. She focuses on women in African America, who live in a wider world and fight to create autonomous identities outside male dominance. Though their characteristics are powerful but fragile.

Their power lies in their recognized obligation to their moms, sensuality, and connections with women. These characteristics are highlighted in the work of Walker and women’s issues with males who see them as less valuable than themselves just because they are women. Of course, what comes out of this belief is violence. Therefore Walker’s novels center not so much on racial violence among strangers as on the violence between friends and family, a purposeful, unforeseen yet always predictable brutality.

In his debut collection of short tales, In Love and Trouble, Walker began to explore the dread which has besieged African American women’s lives. She looked at the preconceptions about their life that misrepresent them and mislead them. Her second short story collection, You Can’t Keep a Good Woman Down, dramatizes African American women’s resilience to rebound despite racial, sexual, and economic problems.
