Cox installed a very early version of Linux on one of the university computer society’s workstations while working on the Swansea University campus. This was one of the earliest Linux instals on a busy network, and it exposed several networking problems. Many of these issues were addressed by Cox, who went on to completely rebuild the networking subsystem. He went on to become one of the kernel’s primary developers and maintainers.

He looked after the 2.2 branch as well as his own 2.4 branch versions. This branch was quite reliable, and it featured bugfixes that were applied straight to vendor kernels.

Before limiting his engagement with Linux to get an MBA, Cox was often considered as the “second in command” behind Linus Torvalds himself. After a disagreement with Torvalds over the extent of work necessary to remedy an issue in that subsystem, Cox resigned as the TTY layer maintainer on July 28, 2009.

Between 1999 and 2009, Alan worked for the Linux distributor Red Hat. He worked for Intel Corporation from 2011 until January 2013, when he quit both Intel and Linux kernel development to care for his wife full-time during a critical phase of medical treatment. He returned to both later that year, before accepting early retirement at the end of 2019.

He was also a key contributor to the GNOME and X.Org projects, as well as the principal developer of AberMUD, which he created while at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

On July 18, 2013, Cox was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. On July 20, 2016, he earned an honorary doctorate from Swansea University, his alma mater.
